THE TOWN
Senise (7000 inhabitants) is the most important center of Sinni Valley – Pollino.
The town is 85 kilometers from Maratea and the municipality il located between 171 and 651 meters above sea level with a total excursion of 480 meters.
Agriculture is very important for the local economy: local farms cultivate cereals (especially wheat), fodder, vegetables, orchards, olive groves and vineyards. Very famous is the production of Senise’s pepper, who has been awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Commission.
In the area of Senise there is an artificial basin, the Monte Cotugno dam, built in the seventies. It is the largest in Europe in clay and its water is used for irrigation of the Ionian coast of Basilicata Region and Puglia Region; the dam is often used for national competitions of rowing too.

FIELDTRIP
Magna Grecia Amphitheatre
Besides the enchanting Monte Cotugno dam there is a modern and innovative amphitheater that will accommodate up to 2,500 spectators.
The project, costed more than € 4.000.000,00, was built using local materials and aims to promote the artistic and cultural offer. This is a new and innovative local development strategy.
After lunch we’ll go to the new sport center by bike.
Farm Marino
In the Pollino National Park in Basilicata, about 500 meters above sea level, the farm Marino has grown so much to extend itself on the territory of three municipalities (Noepoli, San Giorgio and Senise L.) and two provinces (Matera and Potenza). The farm produces, since 40 years, some of the best organic products of Basilicata Region and uts wines are very famous (Aglianico, Primitivo – Syrah – Merlot – Cabernet Sauvignon and Greco).
